Kaiserslautern, 15 April 2025 – Losses caused by leaky pipe networks pose a major challenge for the water sector worldwide. According to estimates, 30 to 40 per cent of treated drinking water is lost. A research team at RPTU now aims to develop AI-supported methods for the rapid, automated and reliable detection and localisation of leaks in distribution networks. The “SmartWine” project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with around 500,000 euros. Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern is involved as a partner from the field and will be testing the developed approaches in its water supply network.
