Smart Mobility - Urban Transportation and Traffic Concepts for Tomorrow

On December 7, 2010, representatives from industry, politics and science, as well as citizens, discussed modern forms of mobility and transportation concepts under the title, "Smart Mobility - Urban Transportation and Traffic Concepts for Tomorrow".  In his opening speech, Dr. Klaus Weichel, Lord Mayor and patron of the forum, referred to the fact that cities and communities worldwide are facing the challenge of reorganizing mobility under the aspects of environment, society and competitiveness in a more efficient and sustainable manner. Kaiserslautern is also facing this challenge and is engaging in this topic with the concept "City of Short Distances".

Jacqueline Kraege, State Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment, Forests and Consumer Protection in Rhineland-Palatinate, who not only greeted the guests, but also participated in the panel discussion, viewed "Smart Mobility of the Future" as one of the most important topics of the future, especially for the Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate as an automobile supplier. Nevertheless, she also asked to consider that Smart Mobility would only have good chances, if it was attractive and the various modes of transportation were coordinated with one another.

In his keynote speech, Prof. Dr. Michael Schreckenberg, the well-known traffic jam expert und panic researcher, informed listeners about future approaches to an integrated on-location mobility.  Modern urban mobility requires rethinking and fresh, sustainable ideas which must take into account the local economy, the environment and society at the same time.
