Smart Meters from A to Z
The energy transition requires the introduction of digital electricity meters under the Meter Point Operation Act. SWK Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern Versorgungs-AG will install these for you free of charge. A smart meter gateway is the communication unit of a smart metering system. It ensures the secure and encrypted transmission of consumption data to the connected mME (modern metering device).
Smart meter gateways are only required to be integrated into the communication network where annual consumption exceeds 6,000 kWh. The mME and the gateway thus form a single unit and together function as an intelligent metering system (iMS) – also known as a smart meter.
In accordance with Section 14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG), consumption points where controllable consumption devices such as wall boxes,
heat pumps or battery storage systems are operated must be equipped with an intelligent metering system, including a control device. As the metering point operator, we are obliged to carry out the installation in such cases.
A modern metering device (mME) is a digital electricity meter. It consists of an electronic measuring mechanism and a digital display showing your current meter reading.
By entering your 4-digit PIN directly on the meter, you can view your consumption figures for the last 12 months (24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, 365 days). The meter readings and consumption figures are not transmitted electronically.
Only where annual consumption exceeds 6,000 kWh – for example, in the case of heat pumps and EEG/CHP systems (in accordance with the EEG/KWKG) with a capacity of over x kW – is it mandatory for the consumption point to be fitted with a smart meter gateway. With the aid of this smart meter gateway, the mME is securely integrated into a communications network, thereby becoming an intelligent metering system (iMS).
