What is district heating?

The SWK combined heat and power plant generates electricity and district heating at the same time. This is known as combined heat and power generation.

In our gas turbine power station, a mixture of natural gas and air is combusted (combined cycle process). The resulting combustion gases drive turbines that power generators to produce electricity. We channel the flue gases, with their high residual energy, through a waste heat boiler, where steam and hot water are generated. The resulting steam drives another turbine, thereby generating additional electricity. Finally, the expanded steam is used via a heat exchanger to heat water for the district heating supply.

This is how we deliver cosy warmth straight to your home and also heat your hot water. This process enables us to achieve a high efficiency of 90 per cent. This helps protect the environment.

Connected heat storage systems also allow us to reduce electricity generation when a lot of electricity is being generated from wind and solar power. We then use the heat from the storage systems to supply our customers with heating and hot water.

Following a resolution by the City Council on 26 June 2017, the City of Kaiserslautern has introduced a licence fee for the use of public roads for district heating supply. This fee is independent of the applicable district heating prices and has been charged to customers at a rate of 0.06 cents per kilowatt-hour for the amount of heat they consume since 1 October 2017. Value added tax at the applicable rate must be added to the licence fee.

Irrespective of the heat supply, an annual charge applies for the meter(s).
