SWK Green Electricity Dynamik – our dynamic electricity tariff

Are you tired of paying a fixed price and would rather pay only what electricity actually costs at any given moment? Then our SWK Green Electricity Dynamic is just the thing for you. Make clever use of price fluctuations on the electricity market to your advantage – save money whilst retaining full control over your monthly energy costs.

How does it work?

Electricity is traded on the exchange, and the price always fluctuates in line with supply and demand. With our dynamic electricity tariff, you can now take advantage of these fluctuations and optimise your individual energy price.

When calculating your energy costs, it is not only your consumption that matters, but also the time at which you use energy.

Why do electricity prices fluctuate?

If more electricity is generated than is currently in demand, prices fall in the short term. On particularly sunny or windy days, for example, a lot of electricity is generated from renewable sources. As a result, the electricity price for that period also falls on the electricity exchange. However, prices rise significantly again when it is cloudy or there is no wind.

Prices on the electricity exchange are also significantly higher, for example, when many people need electricity at the same time – such as in the evening, when everyone is at home.

Political events or natural disasters can also always have an impact on prices in the energy markets.

How is the price calculated?

Your consumption price under our SWK Ökostrom Dynamik tariff consists of two components.

Bestandteile des Strompreises bei Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern: Arbeitspreis und Grundpreis als zentrale Faktoren.

Market price

Hourly market price on EPEX Spot DayAhead (prices updated daily)

Energy price

Includes levies, taxes, charges, consumption-based network and metering costs, and other costs relating to procurement and distribution

Standing charge

Network and metering charges independent of consumption (smart metering), monthly service charge

What opportunities and risks does SWK Ökostrom Dynamik present?

Take the energy transition into your own hands.

Reward yourself for your adaptability and for being energy-efficient.

Play an active part in ensuring grid stability and use your flexibility to help relieve the strain on the electricity grids.

Take advantage of price fluctuations on the spot market by using electricity when prices on the exchanges are low.

Manage your consumption to suit your needs and monitor your energy usage on a daily basis.

Sharp price rises on the spot market can lead to unexpectedly high costs.

Having to deal with price fluctuations and their impact on your consumption on a daily basis makes dynamic tariffs complex products.

Unforeseeable events such as natural disasters or political developments (e.g. wars) can lead directly to sharp rises in prices.

It is essential that you adjust your consumption patterns in line with spot market prices in order to benefit.

When can you sign up for this tariff?

Our SWK Ökostrom Dynamik is initially a product for customers living in Kaiserslautern – within the SWK network area. However, that alone is not enough.

To make the most of our product, you’ll first need a smart meter. With a smart metering system (iMSys), your consumption is transmitted to us in quarter-hourly intervals. We need these figures to bill you based on prices that change hourly.

It is important to note that a digital meter is not automatically a smart meter.
Only when a digital electricity meter is connected to a communication unit – known as a smart meter gateway – do you have a smart metering system.

What else is important to know?

With our SWK Green Electricity Dynamik tariff, you benefit from a short contract term. The initial term is just one month. After that, your contract is renewed for an indefinite period. However, it can always be cancelled at any time with just one month’s notice.

FAQ on SWK Green Electricity Dynamik

The energy transition is in full swing. The share of renewable energies in Germany’s electricity mix now stands at over 50 per cent – and rising. One challenge here is that electricity generation from wind and solar energy fluctuates significantly. The government now wishes to create incentives to better align the generation and consumption of energy over time. Under Section 41a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG), all energy suppliers are therefore obliged to offer a dynamic electricity tariff. We have summarised here exactly what this involves, and the opportunities and risks that such a tariff entails.
