SWK Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern is continuing to expand its own fibre-optic network in cooperation with its subsidiary, K-net Telekommunikation GmbH. The aim is to provide a structured fibre-optic network covering the city of Kaiserslautern, including all its districts. SWK is providing the digital infrastructure, whilst K-net is supplying the relevant products – internet, telephony, TV and mobile communications – under the ‘empera’ brand. As a result, in future, more and more residents of Kaiserslautern will have access to high-speed internet: via a free high-speed home connection from their local regional provider. The expansion of the fibre-optic infrastructure forms the basis for ultra-fast internet. In this way, SWK and K-net are making an important contribution to digitalisation in Kaiserslautern.
The municipal utility company can look back on more than 20 years’ experience in fibre-optic roll-out. Within the city limits, SWK – through ‘empera’, a brand of its subsidiary K-net – already provides high-speed internet to numerous households. To date, more than 5,000 residential units have been connected to high-speed internet.
The expansion of the high-performance fibre-optic network is taking place in several phases, starting in the districts of Mölschbach, Erzhütten/Wiesenthalerhof and Erlenbach, including Gersweilerhof. Further districts are in the planning stage.
“Our municipal utility company ensures the provision of essential public services for Kaiserslautern and the region. We provide everything from a single source. That is why the fibre-optic roll-out brings further opportunities and benefits for residents. For example, we can use the expansion of the fibre-optic network to extend the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. We will also continue to develop our range of products. This means that customers can look forward to great offers in future that combine high-speed internet and electricity,” explains Markus Vollmer, Commercial Director of SWK Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern.
Here’s what happens next:
If at least 20 per cent of residents in the areas covered by the roll-out opt for a fibre-optic contract, construction work will begin.
“Our team will be out and about in the neighbourhoods over the coming weeks. They will not only assess demand but also provide detailed information on the internet, digital television, mobile communications and telephony. The focus will not just be on our exclusive ‘empera’ products, but on our entire product portfolio. You can also rely on expert advice. Our specialists also offer solutions for in-home installation,” says Berthold Willig, Managing Director of K-net Telekommunikation GmbH. “In addition, information events will be taking place shortly. Interested residents will be able to find out everything they need to know about fibre-optic internet there,” Willig continues.
Once the decision to proceed with the roll-out has been made, SWK will provide the necessary infrastructure along the street.
During the construction phase, SWK and K-net will provide the fibre-optic home connection free of charge, regardless of whether a contract with empera has been signed. This creates the conditions for optimal browsing, stable video conferencing and the best possible streaming experience.
Should another private provider begin roll-out in the area at an early stage, empera customers can withdraw from their contract at any time. In any case, empera’s offers are not only affordable but also guarantee maximum flexibility: the contracts have no minimum term and can be cancelled on a monthly basis.
