FAQ – Answers to the most frequently asked questions
A balcony power plant usually consists of one or two photovoltaic modules and an inverter, which can be plugged into a socket using a Schuko plug. A balcony power plant can be installed in a wide variety of locations, such as in the garden, on the roof of the house, on the garage or on a building façade. The electricity generated is fed directly into the domestic electricity supply and can be used immediately by consumers. Balcony power stations with an inverter output of less than 800 watts do not require a permit.
With the smallest model, you can save between €150 and €250 on your electricity bills every year. Depending on the installation location, the storage system and the number of solar panels, you could save even more! Balkonstrom offers a yield calculator to help you work out your savings.
The amount of kWh a ‘Made in Germany’ balcony solar power system generates each year depends on many factors. With optimal orientation at a shaded-free installation site, a balcony solar power system consisting of two photovoltaic modules can generate 800–1,000 kWh in a year. The actual savings achieved depend, in particular, on your own consumption patterns.
Yes, you can connect your balcony power station yourself. The DIN VDE 0100-551-1:2016.09 standard states that non-certified end users are permitted to connect the system to a suitable socket. The connection therefore does not have to be carried out by an electrician.
Yes, you can use a standard socket. Both the German Solar Energy Society (DGS) and the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE) see no problem whatsoever with operating a balcony solar power system using a Schuko plug.
No, you should definitely not do that! Connecting several balcony power stations could overload the power line. In the worst-case scenario, this could cause a fire.
In principle, you are required to register your balcony power plant in the market master data register.
Generally speaking, no – provided the system complies with the legal requirements (e.g. maximum feed-in of 800 W, correctly connected). Registration with the grid operator is usually required, but a ban is not permitted without good cause.
